David Wightman
David Wightman (born 1980, Stockport, Greater Manchester) is a British painter and printmaker based in London, noted for his richly imaginative landscapes that blur abstraction and fantasy. His signature method involves collage: hundreds of pieces of textured wallpaper are cut and assembled marquetry‑style into layered surfaces, overlaid with acrylic to create vivid, otherworldly vistas. Colour, composition, texture, and nostalgia are at the heart of his practice.
Wightman earned an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art in 2003. His early recognition included being awarded the Berwick Gymnasium Arts Fellowship in 2010, a six‑month residency funded by Arts Council England and English Heritage. In 2013 he was commissioned by Arts Council England to produce a large site‑specific work for Brighton’s seafront pavilion.
He has had numerous solo exhibitions in London, Manchester, Montreal, Toronto, and Narbonne. Wightman’s work has featured in outlets such as The Guardian, The Financial Times, Harper’s Bazaar, BBC News, and more. He lives and works in London.
